Why I built this I did not plan to retire when I did. I had a federal career and expected to work it to the end like everybody else. Then my health made the decision for me. Memory problems were at the center of it, and I medically retired about ten years earlier than planned. A medical retirement check is smaller than the paycheck it replaces. So I had two choices. Shrink my life to fit the check, or build something that pays the bills alongside it. I built. I started small, in a regular taxable account. A little invested every day, in three buckets that each do a job. Growth and closed end funds protect the account. High yield weekly payers bring in the cash flow. When the distributions got big enough to cover the smallest bill, I paid that bill from the portfolio. Then the next one. Then the next. Today the portfolio pays the bills. A small margin bridge covers the timing gaps. No boss, no time clock, and the system does not care that my memory is not what it was. It just runs. I am a veteran, and I start my mornings thankful. If you are staring at a smaller check than you planned on, there is a way to build your way out of it. One bill at a time.
